If you engage professional SEO services or social media optimisation specialists, they will almost certainly tell you that results will take a while to trickle through into better search engine rankings and hence increased revenue, and that is probably true. A good SEO campaign will take time- think months, not days or weeks. You not only have to establish a good position in the rankings but you also have to keep it. Remember that your competitors can hire an SEO or social media agency just as easily as you can. Even if they don’t, sites that remain static and are not updated for long periods of time will slip back down the rankings into obscurity.
However, some of us aren’t looking for a concerted SEO campaign. What about those who are just looking to do a little something extra to give their website a little boost? There are a few things you can do to help your site do a little better, and if you have some spare time you can do them today. It’s unlikely that any of them will have a massive effect, but you might be surprised how far a little SEO can go.
If your site isn’t included in DMOZ (the Open Directory), there is no reason not to submit it- unless it isn’t up to standard, in which case you need to put in more effort and bring it up to scratch before doing anything else or thinking about off-site SEO or link building! DMOZ is the single most important directory from an SEO standpoint, and an inclusion there will provide the best inbound link most small to medium sized commercial websites can aspire to get their hands on. Because all sites that get listed are checked for quality by real people and it’s trusted by Google to be discerning, DMOZ is the big link building prize. It will probably take a while for your application to be processed, but you can get the ball rolling by filling in an application form right now.
Another quick link building activity is to create yourself a fan page on Facebook. Put links in place between it and your website and encourage site users (or even just your friends and family) to ‘like’ the page. For each one that does, all their contacts will be exposed to a link to your site and might join up too. If you keep updating the Facebook page with new posts every week or so this first step into the field of social media marketing could bring you significant gains.
The third easy thing to do to improve your SEO a little is write some new content. It doesn’t have to be a 2000-word masterpiece. Aim for 500 words or even 250. Look for a new image to go on your front page or another important part of your website. Try changing the look around a little bit to spice it up for both new and returning visitors. They will appreciate seeing something different and the search engines will also notice the update.
