Organic search engine optimisation has never been an easy thing. Trying to get your pages to appeal in a natural manner is even more complicated now that sociability has been added to the mix. So, exactly how does your social activity affect your site and what should you do about it? Is social-media optimisation possibly the new SEO?
Effect 1: direct action in the SERPs
Both Google and Bing have been adding features which allow users to ‘vote’ for their favourite sites. Both search engines have warned that user likes and dislikes will be taken into account in the rankings. This means that social media management and SEO must now go hand in hand, at least for users who are logged in to Google or Bing. You can discuss this aspect of SEO with us at www.SearchEngineOptimisation.co.uk.
Effect 2: social activity
Just because the search engines are paying attention to social behaviour on their own sites doesn’t mean they’re not looking elsewhere as well. Both Google and Bing have said that they look at social authority when deciding where a page will sit in the rankings. Bing notes that sociability carries more weight in a social search, but site owners can’t discount the importance of social activity and authority in general search. Search engine optimisation experts suspect that social factors are now in Google’s rankings factors.
As with any other factor, the search engines aren’t likely to come out and say exactly what they are and are not doing with sociability. However, the signs are strong that site owners need to boost their social activity for success.
