SEO Link Building: Why Poor Practice Continues

Sometimes when a search engine optimisation is being devised or pursued the ‘don’ts’ are as vital as the ‘do’s.’ One of the purposes of a reputable SEO agency is to share information with regard to practices that can get site owners into trouble. Some of the practices which can lead to sites encountering difficulties in relation to the search engines are quite familiar to those who have an elementary knowledge with regard to SEO, while other risky practices are not universally recognised as such by everyone in the industry. For example, it is commonly known that keyword stuffing alienates readers and can result in poor performance. However, it is not always agreed within the SEO community what constitutes poor practice with regard to link building.

At SearchEngineOptimisation.co.uk we recognise that the rules set out by Google can be a little vague, but we respect them and remember that pleasing the human user is central to effective optimization. Excessively manipulative methods can attract traffic to a site, but they can incur search engine penalties or bring a site down the rankings eventually. In addition, users will not usually enjoy frequenting a site which has not won prominence by ethical methods. When it comes to the topic of link building there are reasons why some individuals use paid links even though Google prohibits their utilisation:

• Link building by ethical means is not always a straightforward activity. This means that it is a great idea to be patient and to accumulate relevant links in a natural way. However, some individuals want fast results and they believe that the can get them by purchasing links.

• Obtaining links in a competitive sector can sometimes be a little frustrating. Some individuals perceive that a site which is doing well has gained in the past from getting links in an inappropriate way and believe that emulating them cannot be wrong. Google has been getting much better at detecting paid links and regardless of the sector a site operates within, paid links spell trouble.

• Unethical link building is sometimes practised out of ignorance. As some individuals gather information with regard to link building via the net, it can be the case that they base their opinions on content which is written by black hat firms who do not appreciate the benefits of a healthy link profile.

• It is possible to get information from out-of-date resources. There was a time several years ago when the purchasing of links was not as frowned upon by the major search engines as it is now. This obsolete information could give novices the wrong idea.

• When a firm is looking out for a specialist firm to outsource its SEO to, it is possible that they can make a poor decision. If they do insufficient research and fail to appreciate that SEO has to be a sustained activity then they may be tempted to use a black hat operation. Getting links in the wrong way from the wrong places can cause a lot of problems for a site as a site is partly judged by the ‘company’ it associates with.

Blackhat link building is bad and it is always going to be frowned upon by search engines forever. So go whitehat and survive!
