Editing Without SEO Content Management Systems

December 18th, 2010 by Jon

Some firms still believe they can pursue search engine optimisation campaigns without using professional SEO services. This means that they are largely unprepared for the complexities of the tasks facing them. The complexity mentioned here does not merely apply to the obviously complicated technical aspects of SEO. For instance, the provision of high grade content is actually much trickier than it might initially appear to a novice. It is not just that large amounts of unique, relevant and interesting content must be generated on a regular basis. It is also a fact that the content must be up-to-date, clear and accurate.

At Searchengineoptimisation.co.uk we work hard to deliver SEO campaigns which tick all the right boxes. For example, the campaigns are flexible to take into account changes in the sphere of search. Furthermore, the campaigns are tailored in line with the specificities of the sites under scrutiny.

When it comes to the details of content, there is a lot to get right. Sometimes a few compromises between the various telling factors are needed. The main thing for a site owner to realise is that outsourcing this specialist activity makes a great deal of sense. There is a plethora of diverse ways in which effective content works, but three essential qualities of high grade content are clear enough:

• The content has to be up-to-date. Users are not interested in recycled industry news. They crave fresh information and insightful comment into current matters of debate. It may save time to put up old news, but there is nothing to be gained by duplicate content. If a user or a search engine detects duplicate content there will be a loss of site credibility. The use of duplicate content is wearisome for users, but with reference to the search engines it is such a poor strategy because it can spoil site performance on the search engine results pages.
• The content simply has to be clear. If the sentences contain too many clauses or long words, some users will go elsewhere to read material which is presented in a more digestible format. In addition to this, large blocks of text have to be broken up. If the paragraphs are excessively long then users will lose themselves in the uninterrupted flow of words. Users have increasingly short attention spans and it is very foolish indeed to find this out the hard way.
• Accuracy is an indispensable quality of effective content. Any facts should be rigorously checked. The grammar has to be correct. Spelling mistakes can be very irritating for users. If too many errors are made, complaints will flow. Sometimes the density of errors is such that users will simply go elsewhere. This means that it can be very tricky to move a campaign forward without the services of an efficient editor. Editing content can be tricky, but poorly edited work is asking for trouble.

It is clear then that generating effective content is far from straightforward. This means that the users’ needs cannot be catered for in an amateurish fashion.

WordPress As An SEO Tool

August 21st, 2010 by Dan

As far as free SEO tools are concerned, WordPress is without a doubt one of the most popular ones used by a wide variety of websites. If you are not familiar with WordPress, it is basically a platform for creating blogs and provides companies with a sold template that makes blogging very simple and easy to do. There is no mistaking that WordPress is extremely popular, however as with everything there are those who are for it and those who are against it. Before deciding whether using a tool such as this is for you, it is worth gaining a greater understanding of how it can benefit your site.

One of the most common complaints with the basic WordPress format is that there are risks of content being too similar. If you imagine hundreds of websites using the same template then there is risk that some of the content is going to be along the same lines. Whilst there could be an element of truth in this, the fact is that the template is in fact just that; a template. It guides the format and can help convert text, such as quotes, into a more desirable format. What it cannot do is write the content for you, so with this in mind, as long as you are posting original and fresh content then the chances of duplicate copy are minimal.

What is even cleverer about WordPress is that it is more than just a basic tool. As far as SEO content management systems go, WordPress appear to have thought of every angle. The best thing without a doubt about this system is the plugins available. WordPress offers its users additional plugins and widgets which enable companies to take their content to an entire new level which is above and beyond the basic program. However, the ‘All in one SEO pack’ is arguably the best. This plugin allows websites to optimise tags and titles so that they are more search engine friendly and can take a lot of the stress out of creating successful search content.

Another common complaint from people using WordPress is that it is not strong enough to be used within social media. There have been reports of WordPress not offering enough integration to enable blogs to be used for social networking purposes. This may have been the case a few years ago, however the Twitter plugin can be a life saver if your social media strategy involves tweeting. The Twitter plugin can basically take control of your tweets and you can set it up to automatically post tweets for you and submit all your blogs to the social networking site. Other useful benefits include the function to shorten URLs for Twitter which makes adapting content very easy.

Another favourite plugin is the smart links one. This is basically an internal linking tool which will identify relevant content within all your web pages. The plugin will then automatically add internal links which makes for a stronger structure and will help you rank higher within SERPs.

Using A Content Management System

July 4th, 2010 by Jon

If you ask a professional search engine optimization company about their thoughts on using a content management system (CMS) then you will no doubt get mixed reviews. Some companies love them and will advise a lot of businesses to use them, whilst others shy away from them as they consider them a bit of a cheat’s way to go about things. Using a professional web design company may arguably result in a more unique and distinctive website which will be designed around your specific personal requirements, however it is not always feasible or necessary. A content management system can allow individuals or companies to create their own website, but at SearchEngineOptimisation.co.uk we can tailor it towards getting the best search engine results.

A content management system is basically a template which people can use to create their website. The good thing about them is that they require little or no knowledge of web design. Perhaps for a large organisation or complex industry it is a better idea to get the professionals in, however there are a lot of one man bands out there who urgently need a website for their company but do not have the resources to get the professionals in right from the start.

When it comes to choice there is a vast selection of CMS out there. WordPress is probably the most popular and is used for creating certain platforms within your website and blogs. There are a lot of others out there too – some are free and some require a payment; it just depends on the level of detail you require.

Another angle on doing your own web design is to actually look at a CMS design company. This may seem ironic yet a company with these skills can still provide a template for you which enable you to create your own website, yet they will design a bespoke content template aimed around your needs.

Whilst the initial set up using a content management system is not too difficult, the process can get trickier as it develops. There is a lot more to a successful website than just a nice design and you still need to do some background work prior to creating your content. Rather than just consider the content you are putting on, you also need to decide what format it is going to be in. Deciding if you are using Flash, Java or any other format is essential so you know how to create your site.

Then there is the obvious point of ensuring your content is easy for people to use and how simple the navigation is within your site. One of the most important factors is optimising your web pages for the search engines as if you are not showing up in here then you are missing out on a lot of traffic. CMS definitely has its place, but perhaps they are simply not enough on their own.

SEO For Small Businesses

June 26th, 2010 by Phil

SEO is evolving daily, however the nuts and bolts of the practise remain essentially the same; and therefore with a decent understanding of the tried and tested methods of search engine optimisation it really is possible to garner the effects of a professional SEO services, at a fraction of the cost – perfect for small businesses!

Unfortunately there is a caveat, and considering the search engine optimisation is a discipline where any kind of advantage can be a really significant, benefit can be gleaned through cash investment, whether its in terms of keyword research or SEO link building; however, money is far from the be all and end all of search engine optimisation and with the right seo tools, and a considerable knowledge of the discipline, it really is possible to replicate the seo effects of larger businesses and professional seo services.

Good SEO Starts at Home

Much of your SEO advantage will be met on your own homepage, which is good news for smaller businesses on little or no budget, as by incorporating SEO into the design of your website, not only do you corroborate your costs but you ensure that your website has a sound SEO architecture.

Of course, optimizing the architecture of your homepage will require a modicum of technical know how, however, some relatively simple tweaks to your site’s structure can garner a weighty SEO advantage:

Efficiency: Building an efficient website will not only keep your users happy, but it will also give you a clear SEO advantage; this is because, quite simply, an efficient page (i.e well laid out and fast loading) will be easily navigable and more conductive to internal linking – which will appeal to search engines as well as users

Site Maps: On a similar note, although relatively simple to do, creating an efficient site map will garner you real seo benefit, as not only does it allow for easier navigation of all the pages on your site, but it facilitates the easy navigation and indexing, of all of your pages by a search engine’s bots.

SEO Aware URLs: By creating static URLs for all of your subpages, which contain relevant keywords as opposed to symbols such as %, &, ? etc as you’d find in dynamic URLs, you will also facilitate the easy navigation of your pages by Googls’s spiders and thereby increase your SEO capability. With this in mind, you can create static URLs for your pages but using Search engine optimisation CMS (content management systems) which will give you a good grasp of the architecture of your pages, and allow you to optimize it accordingly.

Off-Page Considerations

Beyond your homepage, there are plenty of other methodologies you can implement in order to garner an SEO advantage for little or no cost; and it still remains the case that the most fertile beds for seo link building are free pages, such as article submission sites and social media pages – it is important to bear in mind, of course, that any saving in cost will be off-set by hard work.
