At SearchEngineOptimisation.co.uk we know that there are a lot of companies around now who will tell us how to go about SEO and what it is websites need to be doing in order to achieve search engine and online success. What a lot of these SEO agencies fail to highlight however, are the reasons why companies need to use SEO. It has become such a popular online marketing method and a field of expertise in its own right, that a lot of business owners are embarking on search engine optimisation strategies mostly for the reason that everybody else is doing it, and not because they fully understand the reasons behind it and more importantly, how it can directly improve their business.
Gone are the basic days where it was a simple procedure to optimise your site for search engines and search engine users. Nowadays there are so many avenues a company can go down with their SEO that there is no longer a definitive right and wrong answer. As our websites and online presence have also become more complex, we are discovering that every website is different, every customer group is different and the way to optimise a specific website to its maximum potential is different from one to the next.
The basic rule a company needs to remember is that search engine optimisation is designed to make your site more visible within search engines, and ultimately increase the volume and improve the quality of traffic to your website. The ways and means to doing this are vast and tailored to each individual website. Audience research and consumer trends play a big part in a successful SEO campaign, as if you do not know exactly who you are trying to reach then you will be unlikely to actually achieve it.
Classic examples of companies doing things just for the sake of it could be factors such as blog pages. Everyone has a blog page now, it is trendy and popular and appears to be the way in which a lot of websites are communicating with their existing and potential customers. For this reason, it surely makes sense that every single website should be adopting a blog strategy? Well not necessarily, and especially not if the blogger does not understand the benefits of their actions. Anyone can write a blog, however what we cannot all do is know how to link it, market it and generate traffic through it. There is also the fact that the nature of your website simply may not lend itself well to the blogging world.
Other common areas set about with little thought or reason include social media marketing strategies and certain file links and inclusion. Yes both these areas can be a very positive thing for a company if handled professionally, however depending on the goals and objectives of the business; they simply may not be needed. Whilst strong SEO is essential, it is important to understand your company needs more and always know why you are doing something, not just how to do it.
